Hermann Scheer
(24 April 1944 – 15 October 2010)

PNND expresses our most profound sorrow for the passing of our good friend and long-time PNND member Dr Hermann Scheer. Dr Scheer was a dedicated and passionate leader in the movement to abolish nuclear weapons and the development of safe, renewable energies. A proponent of a structural change associated with an energy turnaround, he succeeded in the creation of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and continually called for its effective and rapid expansion.

Dr Scheer was a member of the German Parliament for three decades and advisor to governments and parliamentarians in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. He was General Chairman of the World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE) and President of EUROSOLAR, the European Association for Renewable Energy. Scheer also initiated a EUROSUN Intergroup of the European Parliament and became Chairman of its Advisory Board.

Dr Scheer was recipient of many awards including the World Solar Prize (1998) and the Right Livelihood Award (1999), for his "indefatigable work for the promotion of solar energy worldwide." He described solar energy as the energy of the people.

In 2000, he received the World Prize on Bioenergy. In 2002, TIME Magazine named Scheer "Hero for the Green Century". The American Council for Renewable Energies (ACORE) gave him the Global Renewable Energy Leadership Award. The World Wind Energy Conference in Bejing bestowed him the World Wind Energy Award in 2004 and, in 2009 he was given the Karl Böer Solar Energy Medal of Merit.

His books include The Solar Economy: Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Global Future; Energy Autonomy: The Economic, Social and Technological Case for Renewable Energy and his latest, The Energethical Imperative.

He enlightened people with a smile, inspiring people world-wide to build a renewable energy revolution from the ground up. It is with that same joyous and grateful spirit that we salute his impressive body of work and his steadfast generosity. PNND mourns his passing and salutes his accomplishments and sends deepest condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.
