Dear Friends,
From April 30th until May 11th, 2012, States parties to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) will be meeting in Vienna for the first time since they agreed at the 2010 NPT Review conference on key nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament steps including that:
- "All States need to make special efforts to establish the necessary framework to achieve and maintain a world without nuclear weapons."
- "The UN Secretary-General and the cosponsors of the 1995 Middle East Resolution, in consultation with the States of the region, will convene a Conference in 2012, to be attended by all States of the Middle East, on the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction…"

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and parliamentarians promote nuclear abolition at the 2010 NPT Review Conference |
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon wrote directly to every parliament in February 2010 noting that:
At a time when the international community is facing unprecedented global challenges, parliamentarians can take on leading roles in ensuring sustainable global security, while reducing the diversion of precious resources from human needs. As parliaments set the fiscal priorities for their respective countries, they can determine how much to invest in the pursuit of peace and cooperative security.
I would therefore like to take this opportunity to encourage all parliamentarians to join in efforts to achieve a nuclear-weapon-free world. I salute Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament for its related efforts and for its work towards building support for a nuclear weapon convention.
Please join us in encouraging parliamentarians, including in your country, to take action to support the above goals:
1. Ask your parliamentarians to endorse the Joint Parliamentary Statement for a Middle East Zone Free from Nuclear Weapons and all other Weapons of Mass Destruction (also available in Arabic, French, German, Hebrew, Japanese, Greek, and Spanish.)
2. Ask your parliament to support the UN Secretary-General's plan to abolish nuclear weapons through a nuclear weapons convention (global treaty) or package of agreements (See compilation of resolutions adopted or pending in national and regional parliaments supporting the NWC and/or the UN Secretary-General's five-point plan on nuclear disarmament).
Please let PNND know about any actions taken by your parliaments so we can spread the inspiring news to other parliaments and parliamentarians.
