September 1, 2008: The five Co-Presidents of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament sent a letter to the summit of Lower House Speakers of parliaments from the G8 countries, who gathered in Hiroshima, Japan to discuss disarmament, peace and security issues.

In the letter, Senator Abacca Anjain Maddison (Marshall Islands), Hon. Marian Hobbs MP (New Zealand), Mi-Kyung Lee MP (South Korea), Hon. Alexa McDonough MP (Canada) and Uta Zapf MP (Germany), urged the House Speakers of Japan, the US, Italy, the UK, Germany, Russia, Canada, France and the European Parliament to preserve and strengthen the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, or NPT. They urged their colleagues "to lead the parliaments of G8 countries... in implementing steps leading to the achievement of a nuclear weapons-free world." They continued to assert that "Technical, political and institutional developments in the 21st century have transformed the ideal of nuclear disarmament into a realistic goal. However, it will take leadership and action to make this happen."
